Hurricane Safety

The Public Education office provides information and presentations on how to prepare for hurricanes. The presentation includes how to protect your home inside and out, what to do before the storm arrives, how to protect your interest with your valuables, how to decide to evacuate or not and if so; which way to travel, and what to do when the storm is over and you return home.

The Fire District strongly urges you to prepare a hurricane kit with batteries, flashlights, canned food, a can opener, water for 3 days/person, copies of important documents, a list of medications, names of family members, insurance information, games for children, baby supplies, insulin supplies, a grill or small propane cooker, propane, pet supplies, and any other important items related to your personal survival.

Candles are not a suggested light source as they can easily cause a fire.

If you use a generator, please keep it OUTSIDE and at least 20 feet from any opening into the home.  Install a carbon monoxide detector at the opening to the home where the generator is kept.

If an evacuation is ordered or advised, we highly suggest that you leave.  Dependent on the storm's track will determine which way you travel.  Leave your home secure, take important documents with you, and leave a number where you can be reached in a sealed baggie on the refridgerator.  Let neighbors know where you are going.  Make arrangements to take your pets with you.
