Safety Message

When we change our clocks in the fall and spring, remember to change out the battery in all smoke detectors.  Whether they need it or not, all batteries should be kept fresh every 6 months.  Use the batteries replaced for something else - they will be good until their expiration date.

To optimize the smoke detector's effectiveness, vacuum the lid and gently inside to remove dust and spider webs.  Make sure to stay away from all the contacts.

Check your smoke detectors monthly by pushing the red button.  Make it a special family event to make sure everyone knows what it sounds like.

If your smoke detector is sounding from cooking, wave a towel or newspaper in front to fan it.  Always leave the battery inside!  If it happens often, consider moving the detector a few feet away from the kitchen or change the smoke detector to a photoelectronic brand.

Smoke detectors are your first line of defense for fires.  They can detect smoke way before we can.  Make sure you have one in every living area, on every floor, outside every bedroom, and inside every bedroom door.  It's helpful to have one outside on the lanai and in the garage as well.  Install on the ceiling or wall 8-10 inches from the corner of the wall.

Smoke detectors are available at the fire district if you can't afford one.  Your family's safety is #1 with the employees of Iona-McGregor Fire District.  Safety comes first!
